Doctor explains diagnosis that affects Angelina Jolie and 80,000 Brazilians every year: 'It causes symptoms like a crooked mouth'

Angelina Jolie turns 50 this Wednesday (04). In addition to being an activist and award-winning actress, the star is also known for being very honest about the health problems that affect her . In 2016, the American was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, a condition that results in temporary paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face .
The condition is characterized mainly by a crooked mouth and difficulty moving the face. Most cases are reversible, but it is important to seek medical attention if you notice this type of problem.
"Idiopathic facial paralysis, also called Bell's palsy, is a medical emergency and should prompt the patient to seek emergency care as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial factors in the outcome of improvement or cure," highlights otorhinolaryngologist Dr. José Ricardo Gurgel Testa, a specialist in the subject.
The problem is directly associated with inflammation or swelling of the facial nerve, which prevents the nerve from transmitting signals to the muscles, leaving them weak. "When affected for some reason, this nerve causes symptoms such as a crooked mouth, difficulty moving the face and/or lack of expression in one part of the face, which can also significantly alter people's communication and self-esteem," he warns.
