The lists of the "Viver Lisboa" coalition running for the Lisbon City Council, the Lisbon Municipal Assembly and the 24 parishes of the city will be delivered next Monday, August 11, at 11:30 am, at the Palace of Justice, revealed the same source, indicating that the head of the list, the representative and other members of the candidacy will be present at that moment.
Candidacies for the upcoming local elections, scheduled for October 12, must be submitted by 6:00 p.m. on August 18 to the district judge with jurisdiction over civil matters in the municipality in which they are running, according to the National Elections Commission.
The choice of António Vitorino as the representative for the socialist's candidacy was announced on Thursday night by the newspaper Expresso.
The official source for the PS/Livre/BE/PAN coalition candidacy told Lusa that the nomination of the representative "fell on António Vitorino due to his personality, which is known to everyone", and was "a choice by Alexandra Leitão".
The same source added that socialist André Moz Caldas, who has been the coordinator of this left-wing coalition's electoral program, is the head of the list for the Lisbon Municipal Assembly.
According to the newspaper Público, in the coalition's candidacy for the executive, after the head of the list, the candidates presented are Sérgio Cintra (PS), Carla Madeira (PS), Pedro Anastácio (PS), Carlos Teixeira (Livre), Carolina Serrão (BE), Patrícia Robalo (Livre), António Morgado Valente (PAN), Paulo Pais (PS) and Maria Begonha (PS).
As for the 24 parishes, the PS chose candidates for 21, including the re-election of three current presidents, in the parishes of Ajuda, Beato and Benfica, and for the other three the candidates were suggested by Livre, namely Alvalade, Areeiro and Avenidas Novas.
Before being chosen as president, socialist António Vitorino was considered a possible candidate for next year's presidential elections, but he himself dismissed this possibility by announcing in June that he would not enter the race, considering that he "was unable to gather consensus" that there should be "only one candidate in this political area."
In October 2024, the former European Commissioner was appointed by the PSD/CDS-PP Government to preside over the National Council for Migration and Asylum, a new advisory body under the Migration Action Plan.
António Vitorino was director-general of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), European Commissioner and minister in a government led by socialist António Guterres.
In the local elections on October 12, in addition to Alexandra Leitão, Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), João Ferreira (CDU - PCP/PEV coalition), Ossanda Líber (New Right), Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega), José Almeida (Volt) and Adelaide Ferreira (ADN) are running for president of the municipality.
In the current term (2021-2025), the Lisbon City Council is presided over by the social democrat Carlos Moedas, who governs without an absolute majority, elected by the "Novos Tempos" coalition - PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Aliança.
Among the 17 members that make up the municipal executive, there are seven elected from "Novos Tempos", seven from the "Mais Lisboa" - PS/Livre coalition, two from the CDU and one from the BE.
