Presidential Elections: Seguro calls for convergence of humanists and democrats after Nóvoa's decision

Presidential candidate António José Segurou today called on "humanists, democrats, and progressives" to join his candidacy and welcomed Sampaio da Nóvoa's willingness to contribute to the country.
"What's important to say is that my candidacy is open. I once again appeal to all humanists, democrats, and progressives, to those who want and believe that it's possible to build a country with the unity of all Portuguese people. I call for this convergence," Seguro said to reporters at the entrance to the Paredes de Coura Festival in the Viana do Castelo district.
Regarding António Sampaio da Nóvoa's withdrawal from the 2026 presidential race today, Seguro emphasized that they both share "common values, such as the defense of democracy, humanist values, and the Constitution."
"I take note that this is not a withdrawal from the country. He expressed his willingness to make his civic and intellectual contributions, and the country is grateful to him for that," he said.
In a statement sent to Lusa, university professor António Sampaio da Nóvoa said that, "after careful and in-depth reflection on the political moment the country is going through, and on the responsibilities that such an exercise demands", he came to the conclusion that he should not "move forward with a new presidential candidacy".
"Citizenship demands courage. I will never fail my country. Whenever needed, I will be there. I reaffirm my complete willingness to fulfill my civic obligations in the service of the Portuguese people, the common good, and this greater hope," concluded the former presidential candidate.
