Preventative measure for suspect of mistreating family

A 45-year-old man suspected of domestic violence against his parents and aggravated threats against his sister and brother-in-law, in Viana do Alentejo, was remanded in custody, the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) revealed this Wednesday.
In a statement published by the Regional Attorney General's Office of Évora, the Public Prosecutor's Office indicated that, following the issuance of arrest warrants outside of flagrant crime, the MP presented this Wednesday for the first judicial interrogation the suspect of practicing crimes of domestic violence in Viana do Alentejo, in the district of Évora.
The defendant, according to the statement, is “ indicted, as a repeat offender , for committing two crimes of domestic violence of which his parents”, aged 83 and 74, were victims, and also of “two crimes of aggravated threat, of which his brother and brother-in-law were victims”.
The man, according to the MP, is “strongly indicated that, to satisfy addictive habits (alcohol and drug consumption) — even after having been convicted, in 2016, including effectively serving a prison sentence of three years and nine months (initially suspended in execution and later revoked in 2020), for committing the same crime against his parents”.
“ The defendant, after being released, returned to the practice of psychological and psychological mistreatment , and also against the victims’ respective assets, causing them great fear for their physical integrity and life”, added the MP.
According to the statement, the events took place in Viana do Alentejo “in the period between December 2024 and May 2025, inclusive, threatening to kill his sister and her husband”.
The MP also added that “after the interrogation and verifying the risks of disturbing the investigation and continuing criminal activity, the Public Prosecutor's Office promoted the application of the coercive measure of preventive detention, which was agreed to by the criminal investigation judge”.
Investigations continue under the direction of the Department of Investigation and Criminal Prosecution (DIAP) of Évora (2nd specialized Section) with the assistance of the GNR of Viana do Alentejo.
