Portuguese soldier dies in war in Ukraine

A Portuguese man died this Thursday in combat in the war in Ukraine, CNN Portugal reported this Sunday and Observador confirmed with the Secretary of State for Communities. According to José Cesário, the soldier Jerónimo Guerreiro belonged to the international legion and “was killed in Kupiansk, an area controlled by the Russians”.
“The information came through unofficial channels. The issue of recovering the body is very difficult at this time, but I contacted the young man’s mother, to whom I expressed my condolences,” the minister told Observador, noting the “unofficial” nature of the information. Jerónimo Guerreiro’s mother was already aware of the situation. “She was informed by the command of the International Legion itself,” the Secretary of State said.
José Cesário explained that the Portuguese embassy in Kiev is developing contacts on the ground and that, “in fact, there has been talk of other cases” of deaths of other Portuguese people within the scope of this International Legion. “The participation is in a personal capacity, but I have no concrete information about this”, he added.
