Sports Confederation welcomes decision regarding Sports

The Portuguese Sports Confederation (CDP) today welcomed, in a statement, the new Government's decision to include Sport in the formal designation of a Ministry, that of Culture, Youth and Sport.

Considering that this designation attributes "the political and institutional dignity that has long been required for the sector", the CDP stresses that this evolution "is not merely symbolic" and represents "a clear reinforcement of the political weight of Sport in the government structure and creates conditions for greater ambition in the definition of public policies for the sector".

That confederation also considers that the choice of Margarida Balseiro Lopes to lead the Ministry reinforces this expectation, "due to her political profile and her reformist ambition".

The CDP also stresses that this "was an important step towards making Sport a national goal – but it is only the first step on a path that will still be long", listing several actions that will need to be followed in the next legislature.

For the CDP, it will be necessary to build and implement a National Strategic Plan for Sport, with clear goals and a defined timetable, move towards a new financing model for the sector, which is fairer, more transparent and guided by merit and development, reinforce Physical Education in the 1st cycle of Basic Education, guaranteeing a true commitment to sports training from the earliest years, and ensure a greater presence of Sport in the public radio and television service, valuing the sports, athletes and national federations, and promoting sports literacy among the general public.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) also praised the Government in a statement, welcoming the formal elevation of Sport to a ministry (Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport) and congratulating the new Government "for having moved towards a solution that had long been demanded by Sport in general and Football in particular".

"The FPF also welcomes Margarida Balseiro Lopes, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, expressing its willingness to collaborate in what we believe will be a new era in relations between Sport and the Government, based on the value that is now being given to the sector", adds the note.

The federative body says that this is "not only a decision that recognizes the importance of Sport as a determining sector for the country, but also a moment of renewed hope for those who, like the Portuguese Football Federation, understand that only with a spirit of true collaboration can policies be defined aimed at resolving several of the sector's demands".
