Scientists from the University of Surrey have found that regular consumption of tea, dark chocolate, apples and grapes can help lower blood pressure. The results of the study are published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
The effect is associated with flavan-3-ols, natural compounds found in cocoa, tea, fruits, and berries. An analysis of 145 randomized studies showed that flavan-3-ols can lower blood pressure, especially in people with high blood pressure. In some cases, the effect was comparable to that of medications.
The study also found improvements in the function of the endothelium, the inner lining of blood vessels that plays a key role in cardiovascular health. This improvement occurred independently of changes in blood pressure, suggesting a broader benefit.
The authors emphasize that flavan-3-ols are not a replacement for therapy, but their moderate consumption as part of a balanced diet may be an additional way to maintain health.
