US President Donald Trump may expel Finland and Sweden from NATO as part of a peace agreement with Russia over Ukraine , Jussi Lassila, a research fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, said in an interview with STT .
According to him, Trump may take such a step if the Russian Federation demands NATO's return to the 1997 borders. The expert emphasized that because of this, Finland's and Sweden's membership in the alliance may be cancelled.
"Trump's willingness to accommodate Russia could be truly unprecedented," Lassila said, urging people to prepare for such a scenario, "keep cool" and not be scared.
Earlier, Finnish President Alexander Stubb predicted a strengthening of NATO after Trump's presidency. "I am optimistic that our alliance will be even stronger in four years and perhaps Ukraine will become a member then," he said, emphasizing that NATO allows the US to advance its interests in Europe "reliably and cheaply."
