The administration of US President Donald Trump will cancel more than 90 percent of contracts concluded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for $60 billion, the Associated Press ( AP ) reported, citing an internal order from the US leader's team.
It is noted that the document reflects the results of a study of all international aid programs. According to the memorandum, officials are "eliminating significant losses caused by decades of institutional drift."
In addition, changes are planned to future international aid programs in order to "use taxpayer dollars wisely to advance American interests."
Earlier it became known that the Trump administration has begun mass layoffs at USAID. The cuts are reported to affect thousands of employees.
A US court later ordered Trump to unfreeze foreign aid within two days, noting that a previous similar ruling had not been implemented.
