A new era in recycling in Izmir: Citizens become part of the system

The "Start Transformation at Home" project, launched after Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay took office, has entered a new phase with the launch of a mobile app. Developed for residents of selected neighborhoods, the app allows users to submit requests and complaints. Users can download the app by searching for "Start Transformation at Home."

APPLIED IN 8 DISTRICTS AND 18 NEIGHBORHOODS

The door-to-door packaging waste collection model, long implemented in European countries, has been implemented in Izmir under the leadership of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The "Start Your Recycling at Home" project, initially launched in eight districts and 18 neighborhoods, aims to separate and collect packaging waste at its source and reintroduce it into the recycling chain.

REQUESTS AND COMPLAINTS CAN BE SENT THROUGH THE APPLICATION

A mobile app developed specifically for the project allows citizens to directly provide feedback about the system. The app can be downloaded free of charge on Android and iOS operating systems:

USAGE STEPS

Users who want to log in to the app can register with their Google account or mobile phone number. Users who add their address information can send messages directly to the recycling facility through the Request & Complaint tab within the app. Clicking the recycling icon in the top right corner of the app accesses the Frequently Asked Questions section and detailed information about the project.

In the project, carried out in collaboration with İZDOĞA AŞ, a subsidiary of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, QR codes are placed on collected waste bags. These codes record waste collected from each household in a database. This system operates on an infrastructure developed by İzmir İnovasyon ve Teknoloji AŞ.

WASTE IS BEING RECYCLED INTO THE ECONOMY

Collected packaging waste is transported to the İzDönüşüm Factory, where it is sorted by type and incorporated into the recycling process. This way, the waste is repurposed without causing environmental damage.

Only packaging waste must be placed in the special bags distributed by the municipality. Those who violate this rule and add organic or other types of waste to the bags are subject to penalties. This measure is being implemented to maintain the efficiency of the system and prevent recycling losses that may arise from mixed waste.
