WILL THE FED CURTAIN INTEREST RATE THIS YEAR?
Powell presented the semi-annual Monetary Policy Report, prepared twice a year, to the US Congress.
Powell, who attended the session held by the US Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee on the first day of his presentation, said that the US economy is generally strong and that the bank has made significant progress in line with its goals in the last two years.
Powell said labor market conditions have cooled and remain firm, and inflation is close to the long-term 2 percent target but still remains slightly elevated.
Recalling that the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) has lowered the policy rate by 100 basis points since September of last year, Powell explained that this readjustment of the policy stance was appropriate in light of the progress made in reducing inflation and the cooling in the labor market, and that they continued to reduce their securities holdings.
"Given that our policy stance is now significantly less restrictive than it was before and the economy remains strong, there is no need to rush to adjust our policy stance," Powell said.
