Response to the claim that "USA will close its base in Dedeağaç"

An official from the US Department of Defense stated that the US does not have a military base in the Greek city of Alexandroupoli, and that the base there is a Greek facility and is used within the framework of agreements between the two countries.

A Defense Ministry official made a written statement to AA correspondent regarding the news in the Greek press that the US will close its base in Dedeağaç.

"The US does not have a base in Dedeağaç, this is a Greek facility to which the US has access under the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement," the official said in the statement.

The official, who stated that the base in question was used only as a transportation hub for US equipment entering and exiting Europe, said, "This is not a 'base' that the US will close."

Greek newspapers Dimokratia and Ta Nea claimed that US President Donald Trump had decided to close the American base in the Greek city of Alexandroupoli.

The Dimokratia newspaper reported that the base may no longer be deemed necessary and may be closed once the war in Ukraine has ended, and stated, "Closing the base will strengthen Turkey's influence over the Straits and increase Ankara's authority to control entrances and exits in the region."

In the Ta Nea newspaper's report, it was commented that countries like Greece would be negatively affected if the base in Dedeağaç were to be closed as the US reduced its support for Ukraine.
