Surah Hujurat reading and meaning
The commands and prohibitions in this surah remind us that people are responsible not only to Allah but also to each other. The teachings of Islam play a major role in establishing social peace and in the spiritual and moral maturation of individuals.
READING OF SURAH AL-HUJURAT
Bismillahirrahmanirrahim
Ya eyyuhâllezîne âmenû lâ tukaddimû brain yedeyillâhi ve rasûlihî vettekûllâh(vettekûllâhe), innallâhe semîun alîm(alîmun).
O you who believe! If you are granted a reward beyond compare with the Prophet, then do not belittle him by his words; if you have a righteous heart, then do not be ashamed of your actions and do not be afraid.
Those who believe in Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) will be guided by His commands, so that piety may be magnified and rewarded with the greatest reward.
Innellezîne yunadûneke thousand verail hucurâti ekseruhum lâ ya'kılûn (ya'kılûne).
And if they patiently persevere, even if they were to forgive me, they would not be able to admire me. By Allah, the Forgiver is the Merciful.
Ya eyyuhâllezîne âmenû in câekum fâsikun bi nebein fe tebeyyenû en tusîbû people bi ignorance fe tusbihû alâ mâ fealtum nâdimîn(nâdimîne).
When I say to you, "O Messenger of Allah! I have not sent down a single word from your command, but Allah has commanded you to believe and to deny your sins, and I forbid you to disbelieve and to disobey, so that you may be guided accordingly."
By Allah's grace and blessings, Allah is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.
And if a group of believers are to be found in the first place, then they will begin to worship God's people, and they will obey the command of God, and if they are found in the first place, then they will be found in the second place.
Innemâl believer ihvetun fe aslihû brain ehaveykum vettekûllâhe leallekum turhamûn (turhamûne).
O you who believe! If a people are equal to your people, and if they ...
Ya eyyyuhâllezîne âmenûctenibû kesîran minez zanni, inne ba'daz zanni ismun, ve lâ tecessesû ve lâ yagteb ba'dukum ba'dâ (from ba), e yuhıbbu ehadukum en ye'kule lahme ahîhi meyten fe kerihtumuhu, vettekullâhe, innallahe tevvabun rahîmun.
Ya eyyuhân nasu innâ halaknâkum min zekerin ve unsâ ve cealnâkum şûben ve kabâile li teârafû, inne ekramekum indallâhi etkâkum, innallahhe alimun habîr(habîrun).
The servant of Allah is a believer, but He is a servant of the world, and He does not obey the commandments, and He does not punish the servants for their faith. And He has commanded Allah, and the Messenger of Allah, not to do anything about things, so Allah is the Forgiver, the Merciful.
Innemâl mu'minûnellezîne âmenû billâhi ve rasûlihî summe lem yertâbû ve câhedû bi emvâlihim ve enfusihim fî sebîlillâh(sebîlillâhi), ulâike humus sâdikûn(sâdikûne).
Kul e tuallimûnallâhe bi dînikum vallâhu ya'lemu mâ fîs semâvâti ve mâ fîl ard(behind), vallahu bi kulli thing's alîm(alîmun).
Yemunnûne aleyke en eslemû kul lâ temunnû aleyye islâmekum, belillâhuyemunnu aleykum en hedâkum lil îmâni in kuntum sâdikîn (sâdikîne).
Innallahe ya'lemu gaybes semâvati vel ard (behind), vallahu basîrun bimâ ta'melûn (ta'melûne).
MEANING OF SURAH AL-HUJURAT
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who believe, do not put yourself ahead of Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah. Surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Messenger, and do not shout at him as loudly as you shout at one another, lest your deeds go to waste while you are not aware of them.
Those who lower their voices in the presence of Allah's Messenger are those whose hearts Allah tests with piety. For them is forgiveness and a great reward.
(O Muhammad!) Most of those who call out to you from behind the rooms are people who have no understanding.
If they had been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
O you who believe, if a sinner brings you news, ascertain its truth, lest you harm people unknowingly and become regretful for what you have done.
Know that the Messenger of Allah is among you. If he had obeyed you in many matters, you would have been in trouble. But Allah has made faith beloved to you and made it beautiful to your hearts, and has made disbelief, transgression, and opposition (to Islam's commands) hateful. They are the ones who are guided.
Allah did this as a favor and blessing from Himself. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
And if two parties of believers fight each other, make peace between them. And if one party oversteps the limits against the other, then fight against the overstepper until he returns to Allah's command. But if he returns, then make peace between them with justice and deal with them justly. Allah loves those who deal justly.
The believers are but brothers. So make peace between your brothers and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy.
O you who believe! Let not one group ridicule another; perhaps they are better than they. And let not women ridicule other women; perhaps they are better than they. And do not slander one another, and do not call one another by nicknames. What a bad name is wickedness after belief. And whoever does not repent - those are the wrongdoers.
O you who believe! Beware of much suspicion, for some suspicion is a sin. And do not spy on one another and do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? That is what you abhor! And fear Allah. Surely Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
O people! We have created you from a male and a female and made you into clans and tribes that you may know each other. The most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the one who fears Him most. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.
The Bedouins said, "We believe." Say, "You do not believe. (So do not say, "We believe.") Say, "But we submit." Faith has not yet entered your hearts. If you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not diminish the nigh of what you have done. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Those who believe are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and do not doubt, and strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives. They are the truthful ones.
Say: "Do you teach your religion to Allah? Allah knows everything in the heavens and the earth. Allah has full knowledge of all things."
They remind you of their being Muslims as if it were a favor. Say: "Do not remind me of your being Muslims as if it were a favor. On the contrary, Allah has been gracious to you by guiding you to faith, if you are truthful."
Surely Allah knows the unseen of the heavens and the earth. Allah sees what you do.
COMMENTARY OF SURAH AL-HUJURAT
Surah Al-Hujurat is the 49th surah of the Quran and takes its name from the word "hujurat", meaning "rooms" or "places of peace". It contains the basic principles that regulate the social and moral values of Islamic society and focuses on social relations, human rights, moral behavior and rules to be observed in relationships with other people. It presents very important messages that emphasize the importance Islam gives to human rights, social justice and the protection of individual rights. The surah draws a detailed roadmap on how believers should act in their relationships with each other.
In its first verses, it is stated that opposing the commands of Allah and His Messenger is a behavior that disrupts peace in society. Believers should not exceed the limits set by Allah and should respect His commands. In addition, obedience to the words and actions of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) is of vital importance for the Islamic society. These verses remind us that individual and social behaviors must be compatible with Islamic morality.
Another prominent message of this surah is that believers should be careful about bad assumptions and gossip among themselves. The verse, "Do not follow suspicion" (al-Hujurat, 49/12), indicates that people should not have bad thoughts about others. Negative behaviors such as gossiping, damaging people's reputation, and disrupting social peace are among the actions that Islam strictly prohibits. It states that they should use respectful and polite language towards one another. As Allah commands, believers should avoid hurtful words and communicate with each other in a tolerant manner.
In the Surah Al-Hujurat, it is emphasized that differences of race, class and social status are invalid for the Islamic society. It is stated that the differences between people should only serve the purpose of meeting and getting to know each other. The most valuable in the sight of Allah are not those who act superior, but those who have the deepest piety towards Him. This clearly shows that every individual in society has equal rights and that no individual is superior to another.
Another important piece of advice is to eliminate hostilities between people. Surah Al-Hujurat encourages the resolution of conflicts between believers through patience and tolerance. It states that conflicts should be resolved peacefully through proper communication and arbitration. It points out the importance of mediation in resolving problems within society.
The Surah Al-Hujurat also advises believers not to judge each other without knowing each other. Every individual is valuable and honorable in an Islamic society. A person's background, race or social status should not be a basis for judging their religious values. This Surah emphasizes Islam's understanding of universal brotherhood and strengthens solidarity and unity among believers.
