The International Folk Dance Festival has begun in Kartal.

Speaking at the opening, Kartal Mayor Gökhan Yüksel emphasized that culture and art are the most important forces that bring societies together. Yüksel said, "Let the unifying and healing power of art and culture increase in Kartal, Istanbul, and the world. The salvation of humanity will be possible through the unifying power of friendship, brotherhood, and art."
Highlighting Kartal's strong history in folk dance, Yüksel said, "Today, we have brought this heritage to an international level. It is very valuable for artists from different countries to meet on the same stage in a friendly manner during a time of ongoing wars."
Following the speeches, the festival cortege took the stage. The first performance was presented by the Gebze Association for Down Syndrome and Disabled People of Turkey, and the program commemorated Erhan Zaza. Performers included the Turkey-Cappadocia Kilim Dance Sports Club, Dance Group Zora from Bulgaria, Evolution Dance Workshop from Italy, Ballet Folklorico de Occidente from Mexico, Folklore Ensemble Rozmarin from Slovakia, the Anos Dance Group from Georgia, the United Colors Folklore Academy from Macedonia, the TRNC-Famagusta Folk Dance Association, and numerous other groups from Türkiye.
While the colorful shows received great applause from the audience, citizens who filled the square showed great interest in the dancers' performances.
The festival, organized in collaboration with the Kartal Municipality and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, will last until September 1. For four days, folk dance groups from different countries will perform every evening in Kartal Square.
