Cengiz Holding, owned by businessman Mehmet Cengiz, who previously came to the fore with his criticisms of exorbitant prices in DAP fertilizers as claimed by CHP Niğde Deputy Ömer Fethi Gürer, turned the war to his advantage this time while farmers were being crushed. The price of UREA fertilizer, which was 19,635 liras a month ago, increased by 38.5 percent to 27,192 liras.

Compared to last May, the price of DAP fertilizer increased by 12.9 percent to 30,521 lira. The price of compound fertilizer increased by 10.7 percent to 19,198 lira, the price of ammonium sulfate fertilizer increased by 6 percent to 11,768 lira and the price of ammonium nitrate fertilizer increased by 3.1 percent to 13,294 lira.

The Chairman of the Union of Chambers of Agriculture of Turkey, Şemsi Bayraktar, said, “Turkey imports more than 90 percent of chemical fertilizer raw materials. Fertilizer prices also change depending on the dollar exchange rate. The Iran-Israel war that started on June 13 also increased fertilizer prices in our country,” and continued: “Compared to the previous year, the price of UREA fertilizer increased by 99.4 percent, DAP fertilizer by 48.8 percent, compound fertilizer by 42.7 percent, ammonium nitrate fertilizer by 36 percent and ammonium sulfate fertilizer by 34.7 percent. In the upcoming period, top fertilization of hot climate grains such as corn, sunflower and rice will be carried out.

Farmers who were previously unable to procure fertilizer will be forced to buy fertilizer at these prices, and many will not be able to afford it. Diesel prices have also been affected by these developments. The price of diesel per liter has increased by 6.2 percent monthly and 15.1 percent annually.”

3 major players in DAP fertilizer

The recent increases in fertilizer prices are drawing farmers' reactions. The biggest players in the market for determining DAP fertilizer prices, which have caused a big increase in farmers' costs, are Eti Gübre, Yıldızlar Entegre Holding and Gübretaş. As the prominent companies increase prices, the farmers' backs are getting even tighter. Dap fertilizer is basically defined as a product designed to meet the phosphorus and nitrogen needs of the crop.
