EU rolls up its sleeves against US tariffs

The European Commission said it will present plans in the spring to make Europe's struggling steel sector more competitive and protect it from looming US trade tariffs.
The action plan will be announced following a 'strategic dialogue' meeting with key representatives of the sector, to be held on March 4 under the chairmanship of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“The steel industry is a key sector of the European single market. It is also crucial in our fight against climate change. We want to ensure that the European steel industry is both competitive and sustainable in the long term,” von der Leyen said.
The commission said that on March 4, steelmakers, raw material suppliers and other stakeholders involved in the sector will discuss how to enhance competitiveness, promote decarbonisation and electrification and ensure fair trade relations.
