Tech giant announces major layoffs: Thousands will be affected

In the statement made by Microsoft, it was stated that the decision in question covers the company's various departments, operations in different countries and employees with different experience levels.

A source familiar with the process told CNBC that the move would affect less than 4% of Microsoft's global workforce.

A Microsoft spokesperson made a statement on the subject and said:

“We continually review our organizational structure and continue to implement necessary changes to achieve success in rapidly changing market conditions.”

Microsoft has cut staff several times, including a performance-based downsizing in January that affected less than 1% of its total workforce.

More than 6,000 people were laid off in May, and at least 300 employees were laid off in June. Last year, Microsoft laid off 10,000 employees.

18 THOUSAND PEOPLE WERE LAY OFF IN 2014

Microsoft's most extensive layoffs to date occurred after the acquisition of Nokia's devices and services unit in 2014. Around 18,000 people were laid off at the time.
