Social media has reduced the desire for plastic surgery to under 18 years of age

With the rapid growth of social media, affecting every aspect of our lives, perceptions of beauty have also shifted. Many people, especially young girls, are now seeking cosmetic surgery before the age of 18 to look like their filters. Experts, however, are issuing warnings, emphasizing that cosmetic surgery should only be performed when necessary.

Social media filters have increased the number of people who are dissatisfied with their bodies.

Dr. İlke Karagöz, a Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist, said, "With the widespread use of filters on social media, the number of people dissatisfied with their bodies has increased. Consequently, the number of applications to plastic surgeons for this purpose is increasing. When people apply to us, we must first evaluate important issues such as, 'Is the surgery they want suitable for them? Are they aware of the risks and consequences of the surgery? Is their body suitable for the procedure?'"

"AN OPERATION CANNOT BE CARRIED OUT JUST BECAUSE A PERSON WANTS IT"

Dr. Karagöz stated that not every cosmetic surgery is suitable for every individual, saying, "Every surgery has its own approval criteria. Surgery isn't performed simply because a person wants it. If a person's expectations are unrealistic, the surgery won't be performed. These procedures need to be planned very carefully."

"AESTHETIC INTERVENTIONS SHOULD BE PERFORMED AFTER THE AGE OF 18"

Karagöz, noting that aesthetic concerns have receded into adolescence due to the influence of social media and peer bullying, later said: "I definitely recommend medical aesthetic procedures for those over 18. Some people come to me in high school wanting nose surgery, and I recommend surgery after they turn 18. Sometimes young people come with their mothers, and their families say their children no longer want to go to school due to aesthetic concerns. We immediately direct them to seek psychological support; we don't perform cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic procedures should be performed after the age of 18."
