27-year-old Meltem Gökhanoğlu was detained at her home following a complaint by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's lawyer and taken to the Istanbul Vatan Police Department.
At the police station, Gökhanoğlu was asked about the statements he made in a post on the social media platform X account.
In the post, it was seen that CHP Women's Branch Chair and Osmaniye Deputy Asu Kaya made the following statements regarding her conversation with MHP Chair Devlet Bahçeli in the Turkish Grand National Assembly on August 29:
"Ms. Asu, first of all, I must say that bowing down like this before a figure like Devlet Bahçeli is completely unbecoming of a woman like you. As the chair of my party's women's branch, your behavior is shameful. If the demon called Devlet Bahçeli appears before me, I swear on my honor that I will display the same attitude you failed to display."
"I DID NOT INTEND TO INSULT ANY PUBLIC OFFICIAL"In her statement to the police, Meltem Gökhanoğlu stated that she has been a member of the Republican People's Party (CHP) since 2019 and has held active roles within the party. In her defense regarding the post in question, Gökhanoğlu said, "In the text I wrote to Asu Kaya, the Chair of the Republican People's Party's Women's Branch, I expressed my reproach for our imprisoned mayor, Mehmet Murat Çalık, and the illnesses he has been experiencing. Seeing this as a situation beyond political courtesy, I acted extra emotionally and used reproachful language towards Asu Kaya. I never intended to insult any public official. I do not recall using any offensive words in the text."
Gökhanoğlu was also asked about the allegation that he insulted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in another social media post. Gökhanoğlu said, "I did not mean the president; there was no insult directed at him personally or his office. I do not accept the accusation against me and demand my release."
LAWYERS REACT TO "BOX FILE"According to reports, 27-year-old Meltem Gökhanoğlu will be referred to Çağlayan Courthouse within the day. Gökhanoğlu's lawyers, Atahan Öztürk and Doğan Çıngı, spoke to ANKA News Agency about the proceedings.
Lawyer Atahan Öztürk stated that they were closely following the detention process of their clients and said:
A file was created following a complaint filed by Devlet Bahçeli's lawyer. The petition was submitted undated, and the date of the file's opening is unclear. The investigation reports within the file indicate an attempt to transform suspicion into evidence. Even after the client was taken into custody, additional investigation reports were created. With these additional reports, an attempt was made to charge him with the crime of 'insulting the president .' The file is effectively an omnibus case. We have completed Meltem Gökhanoğlu's testimony. She will be referred to the Çağlayan Courthouse tomorrow. As her lawyers, we are monitoring the process.
Attorney Doğan Çıngı stated that an omnibus investigation was being conducted against his client, combining X-related content from various content. Çıngı said, "His detention at home for thoughts falling within the scope of freedom of expression demonstrates that the process was conducted unlawfully. As the Lawyer's Voice Initiative, we have been following the process from the very beginning. We will be present during the prosecution phase and expect a positive decision."
