Bassetlaw councillor Lynne Schuller, has shared a message of support to everyone affected by Saturday evening’s devastating explosion.

In a post shared on social media, she wrote: “Thoughts are with the people of John Street Worksop. Explosion tonight emergency services of scene. I sincerely hope people are safe”

In the latest update from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, the service has confirmed that the situation has now been officially escalated to a major incident with crews and emergency personnel remaining on site throughout the night and into Sunday.

They said:

"There is still a substantial emergency service presence on John Street, Worksop.

"Firefighters and specialist teams from East Midlands Ambulance Service are working to account for all local residents. Multiple houses in and around John Street have been evacuated.

"This has now been declared a major incident, and we are likely to be on scene throughout the night and even into Sunday morning.

"Officers on scene are providing assistance to residents who have been affected, and Crown Place Community Centre has been opened as a place of safety.

"We ask that members of the public still avoid the area. We will continue to update on this incident in due course."

Several nearby roads around the fire on John Street, Worksop have been closed and people are advised to avoid the area.

Chief Inspector Neil Humphris, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This is a major incident and emergency services will remain at the scene throughout the night.

“Multiple properties have been evacuated as we work with our partners to respond to this incident and understand how it happened.”

So far, no details have been released about any injuries or fatalities.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) has urged people to stay away from the site of a “significant” gas explosion as they continue to assess damage and make sure all residents have been evacuated and safely accounted for.

The fire service said it was first called to the scene at 7.39pm after receiving numerous calls from concerned members of the public and as of 9.24pm it was responding with assistance from crews from Warsop, Worksop and Mansfield Fire Station as well as Clowne Fire Station.

Although the Meadows incident is now winding down, firefighters and emergency personnel are continuing to respond to the other major incident in nearby Worksop, following a gas explosion on Saturday evening.

Videos posted on social media showed the front of a terraced house had been blown out, while neighbouring houses had their windows damaged.

One person on Facebook described hearing a "a terrific bang, like a very loud firework" as they turned into Gladstone Street from Gateford Road.

"I thought the back end had blown off my car," they said. "A house in John Street has had, presumably, a gas explosion!"

Group Manager Leigh Holmes who is currently on scene has issued a statement on the situation so far.

Leigh said: "Firefighters have been working hard on scene at The Meadows with @nottspolice, Nottingham City Council, @EMASNHSTrust, @nationalgrid & @EnvAgency.

"The incident is now under control and we will begin to relax the cordon in the next hour as we continue to scale down this incident.

"I would like to thank the local communities for their patience whilst we have been dealing with this incident."

A photo has shown the scene this evening after a blaze.

The fire service said at 10.25pm:

We will soon be looking at scaling this incident down meaning we will have less fire engines on scene as the fire is now under control.

Notts fire service says of the incident in Nottingham:

We now have 10 fire engines in attendance at this incident.

It is an old commercial premises in a residential area. The building has been severely damaged but there are no reports of any injuries.

Crews are now working to get the fire under control, with thanks to our Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) which has been able to tackle the fire from above.

In a separate incident, firefighters are dealing with an "explosion" on John Street, Worksop.

Fire crews from Warsop, Worksop and Mansfield Fire Station as well as Clowne Fire Station (Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service) are currently in attendance following the initial call at 7:39pm this evening.

We ask that the public to avoid the area whilst crews do their work.

More details will follow in due course.

We are currently at the scene of large fire in Beauvale Road, The Meadows.

Multiple properties have been evacuated and several road closures are in place.

"Fire crews from London Road, West Bridgford, Highfields, Stockhill, Arnold, Bingham and East Leake Fire Station along with Ilkeston Fire Station (Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service) and Shepshed Fire Station (Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service) have been working on this incident since the call at 8:11pm this evening.

"We ask that the public to avoid the area whilst crews do their work. More details will follow in due course."
