Royal Family LIVE: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's new Netflix deal 'a slap in the face'

A royal expert believes the new Netflix deal signed by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry is a "slap in the face" compared to their original contract signed in 2020. The Sussexes signed a new "multi-year, first look" for upcoming film and television projects with the streaming giant.

This arrangement means Netflix can approve or not use any new film or television projects before anyone else - allowing them to pick and choose what they invest in. Daily Mail diary editor, Richard Eden said: "It's definitely a slap in the face. Let's deal with the facts. Harry himself in his interview with Oprah Winfrey talked about how he needed money and he needed it quickly because security and money had been cut off from his father."

When the couple quit as working royals, they signed a five-year deal in September 2020 to make documentaries and films for the American streaming giant thought to have been worth up to $100million (£75million).

Speaking of the new deal announced earlier this week, Mr Eden claimed: "This is none of a kind from everything I have heard. It is just a first look deal so the only money they will receive is if the programmes are commissioned."

During the couple's interview with Oprah after leaving the Firm, Harry talked about working with Netflix for monetary means, as reported in the Daily Mail. "During COVID, the suggestion by a friend was, 'What about streamers?'' Harry said, while Meghan added: "We genuinely hadn't thought about it before."

"We hadn't thought about it," Harry continued. "So, there were all sorts of different options. And look, from my perspective, all I needed was enough money to be able to pay for security to keep my family safe."
