SIU investigating after driver allegedly fleeing traffic stop crashes in Ingersoll

Ontario's police watchdog has invoked its mandate after one person was injured in a single-vehicle collision early Sunday morning in Ingersoll.
The collision came a short time after Oxford OPP had attempted to pull the driver over in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 around 3:30 a.m., provincial police said in a statement.
The suspect vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene, and was involved in a single-vehicle crash a short time later along Canterbury Street in the Oxford County town, just east of London. The intersection of Canterbury and Harris Street reopened around 5 p.m. after being closed for most of the day.
"The driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries," police said in a brief media release.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and invoked its mandate, police said. A request for comment to the agency was not returned before publication.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
