Pope Francis died of a stroke early Monday, not long after appearing in his wheelchair to address the faithful on Easter Sunday. The 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church also had a notable meeting with the American vice president JD Vance on Sunday, which has prompted plenty of macabre jokes on social media, as often happens when something weird occurs in the world. And some of them are pretty funny.
Vance is an adult convert to Catholicism who has drawn criticism for his, shall we say unorthodox ideas about the Catholic faith. Catholics believe the pope is infallible, but Vance sure seemed to question the ideas held dear by Pope Francis on a regular basis.
Vance responded to news of the pope’s death by tweeting out his condolences, writing, “I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill.”
For his part, President Donald Trump wrote, “Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis, in Rome. We look forward to being there!” Very solemn, Mr. President. He sure knows how to find the right tone for any occasion, doesn’t he folks?
