As Beck's sort-of boyfriend, Benji poses a threat to Joe. While Joe obviously thinks he's the better match, Beck keeps going back to Benji. As a result, Joe decides to put a stop to his competition for good. In episode 2 of season 1, Joe kills Benji by putting peanut oil in his coffee, knowing he has a fatal allergy to nuts. In the season 5 finale, it’s revealed that Joe has been convicted of Benji’s murder.

As Beck's best friend and admirer, Peach instantly takes a dislike to Joe. But not to worry, as the bookstore worker is intent on getting rid of anyone standing in his way. In season 1, episode 6, Peach shoots Joe and he falls to the ground. However, he's merely playing dead, and when Peach gets close, he wrestles her for the gun, which goes off. It's later revealed that Joe shot Peach, but he fakes a suicide note and everyone believes that she killed herself. Joe is finally found guilty of Peach’s murder in the season 5 finale.

In a flashback in episode 9 of the first season, Joe comes face to face with Elijah, a record executive who's been hooking up with Candace. Flying into a rage, Joe pushes Elijah off the top of a building, and we see him hit the pavement below.

Viewers probably weren't all that sad to see this grisly end. In the season 1 finale, Joe takes on his next door neighbor, Ron, a former parole officer, who's physically abusive to his partner Claudia, and her son Paco. While defending Paco, Joe ends up killing Ron, which is just as well as he could seemingly see Joe's dark side, making him a threat.

Guinevere Beck's death hit hard. When Joe locks Beck up in his glass cage, everything seems hopeless, but some valiant escape attempts make it seem as though she might get away. Alas, Beck isn't a match for Joe, who is already a little too good at killing in season 1. After her death, Joe finishes writing Beck's book, which is published posthumously. She does, of course, come back to haunt Joe as a figment of his imagination in season 4.

In season 5, Bronte and a group of amateur sleuths seek justice for Beck, believing her therapist, Dr. Nicky, is wrongly convicted of her murder. In the final episode, Bronte demands that Joe tell her which sections he added to Beck’s book, and later gets the volume republished without his additions. Thanks to Bronte’s dedication, Joe is captured and sentenced for killing Beck.

After arriving in Los Angeles in season 2, Joe steals the identity of a guy called Will. Unfortunately, Will is in a lot of debt, and the creditors came calling. One such debt collector, Jasper, makes the mistake of attacking Joe, which inevitably gets him killed in episode 2.

Season 2, episode 4 sees Joe trying to stop famous comedian Henderson from preying on young girls. When Ellie gets drawn into Henderson's lair, Joe finds evidence that Henderson is a dangerous paedophile. After trapping the comic and making him confess to his dark deeds on tape, Joe “accidentally” kills Henderson when he tries to escape. Landing at the bottom of the staircase, Joe frames Henderson's death as a suicide.

In the penultimate episode of season 2, we're shown a flashback of a young Joe, which explains a lot about his serial killer tendencies. After watching his mom being violently abused by a boyfriend, who may or may not be his father or stepdad, Joe picks up a gun and shoots the man dead. While Joe is protecting his mother, his actions change the entire course of their lives, and likely started him down the murderous path he's on.

Ryan is a somewhat personal kill for Joe in season 3, episode 9. As Marienne's ex-husband, and the reason she has struggled to attain custody of her daughter, Joe decides Ryan needs to go. After unsuccessfully trying to drug him, Joe impulsively pushes Ryan over a wall in a parking garage. When this doesn't work, Joe stabs Ryan multiple times, and makes the scene look like a mugging.

Just like Beck's death, Love's murder is one of the most shocking of the series. In the season 3 finale, Love paralyses Joe by drugging him with aconite. Little does she know that Joe was anticipating this move, and has already taken the antidote. Before Love can kill him, Joe injects his wife with a lethal dose of aconite, then stages the scene to make it look like a murder-suicide. Just like Beck, Love returns in season 4 to haunt Joe.

Season 4's murder mystery plot includes a plethora of deaths, and at first, it looks as though Joe isn't the culprit. Fellow college lecturer Malcolm turns up dead on Joe's kitchen table in the very first episode. Assuming he may have killed him, Joe disposes of the body, but the mysterious death is only the beginning of a twisty whodunnit.

In the second episode of season 4, artist Simon is killed after his extravagant art exhibition, and his death sparks the search for the Eat the Rich Killer. The murderer even cuts off Simon's ear, having previously cut off one of Malcolm's fingers.

As Lady Phoebe's driver and bodyguard, Vic is always lurking. Immediately suspicious of Joe, Vic watches him have sex with Kate in episode 3. The next day, Vic follows Joe to a crypt, where he holds him at gunpoint. He also discovers that Joe has Malcolm's ring, which he believes is proof that Joe is the killer. Unfortunately for Vic, Joe overpowers the bodyguard and chokes him to death.

A weekend getaway to Lady Phoebe's family manor quickly turns deadly. The overbearing and frankly rude Gemma is found stabbed to death in Kate's bedroom. When Joe enters the room, Kate is next to the body holding a bloody knife, but insists she didn't kill anyone. The Eat the Rich Killer appears to have struck again.

After Joe “discovers” that Rhys is the Eat the Rich Killer, he's drawn further into his web. In season 4, episode 7, Rhys tasks Joe with finding someone to frame for the murders, and reveals that he kidnapped Marienne after Joe made sure she got on to the train to Paris. Rhys tells Joe he has to murder Kate's father, Tom Lockwood, in order to save Marienne. However, Tom reveals that he knows Joe's real identity, and orders him to kill Rhys.

With Tom's help, Joe finds Rhys' country home and ambushes him. Joe goes on to torture Rhys to try and learn Marienne's location, and ends up killing him. It's then that Joe realizes that he's been hallucinating a version of Rhys the entire time. He's also just killed the real Rhys Montrose, who has no idea who Joe is. (Still confused? In the season 4 finale, Joe does the unthinkable and kills Kate's father, Tom Lockwood. After learning that Tom has controlled Kate's entire life, and stalked her to a dangerous extent, Joe decides to kill his girlfriend's father. He arranges a fake meeting between Tom and Kate, but surprises the businessman and ties him up. Despite Tom's offers of money, Joe kills him and makes his death look like a robbery.

Joe also kills Tom Lockwood's driver, who walks into the hangar while Joe is questioning Tom. Before Hugo can save his boss from danger, Joe slashes his throat with a box cutter.

Joe then frames Hugo for Tom's murder, making it seem like he robbed the billionaire and the confrontation went too far. He even transferred money into Hugo's accounts as evidence of the robbery, which the authorities would believe given Hugo's poor financial history. Joe then buries Hugo's body in a remote location to fake his disappearance.

Edward's murder is one of the saddest deaths of season 4. Joe finds out that Nadia and Edward are onto him. He slits Edward's throat while he's waiting for Nadia to arrive with evidence of Joe's guilt. Nadia is framed for his murder, and goes to prison as a result.

The first person Joe kills in season 5, episode 1 is Kate’s Uncle Buffalo Bob Cain, after he threatens to oust Kate from The Lockwood Corporation as CEO by releasing her dark secrets to the press. After breaking into Bob’s New York home, Joe handcuffs him to a chair then asphyxiates him with a lasso. Joe stages the crime scene to make it look like Bob hung himself.

Initially, Joe accidentally kidnaps Maddie Lockwood instead of her twin sister Reagan (both played by Anna Camp). Realizing his terrible faux pas can never get out, Joe manages to convince Maddie she needs to kill Reagan. After locking both twins in his glass cage at Mooney’s, Joe coerces Maddie into injecting her diabetic twin Reagan with insulin at the end of episode 4, thus causing her death.
