The Goods and Services Tax Council will begin its two-day meeting on Wednesday to take up sweeping reforms of the indirect tax structure, launched eight years ago. Termed a ‘Diwali gift’ by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address, the Centre’s proposal to reform GST is aimed at reducing the tax burden on the common man and easing compliance for businesses.
