HMRC tax bill alert with 'everyone' urged to act now

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) took to X on Thursday as it said "everyone can" in a new alert to UK taxpayers.

The authority, which is responsible for tax and customs, regularly issues updates, and its latest of these warned people not to get "caught out". The post reads: "Everyone can learn to spot the signs of tax avoidance. Don't get caught out."

Further information in an accompanying video adds: "Been offered a way to boost take home pay? Don't get caught out - it could be tax avoidance. Learn to spot the signs."

Guidance found on Gov.uk further explains that people can make a simply check to see if they're paying the right amount of tax. It adds: "If you think you might be involved in a tax avoidance scheme please get in touch with us as quickly as possible.

"We’ll support you. We can help you get out of the scheme and settle your tax affairs. Ignoring the problem is not the answer. The longer you leave it the bigger the tax bill. Our aim is to get you back on the right track.

"No judgement. Simply offer you the support you need. And if you can’t afford to pay everything in one go, we may be able to offer you an instalment arrangement."
