Coronation Street shares 'disappointing' announcement with behind-the-scenes clip

Coronation Steet got fans' hopes up posting a clip featuring a departed character before clarifying they are not returning to the show. The video was a "getting to know you" film featuring Sydney Martin who plays Betsy Swain in the long running ITV soap.

In the clip she is quizzed by Luca Toolan who played Mason Radcliffe in the show until his character was killed off on January 6 after he was stabbed as part of a knife crime storyline.

The show posted alongside the clip to let fans know that sadly he won't be returning to the show despite his participation in the clip.

"Get to know Sydney Martin (and sorry no, Luca isn't back, this was filmed on his last day rip Mason) #Corrie @sydneymartin._ @lucatoolan @itv," they wrote.

Fans were disappointed by the news and shared they had high hopes for a romance between Luca and Betsy's characters had he not departed the show.

"The writers could have gotten a lot of mileage out of these two as a couple, shame," one commented.

Another concured writing: "Completely agree. They have amazing chemistry. Wrong move letting him die. But there is a but. They could have faked his death and put him in witness protection? However that's more a US soaps kinda story line and I don't like US soaps."

A third chimed in: "For sure just loved these two together so sad when they killed Mason off I didn't like him at the start but he grow on me and his checky face. They both could have been the 2020s Nick and Leanne."

A fourthh gushed: "One of my favourite duos!" followed by a yellow heart emoji.

A fifth opined: "These two have a connection that would have been TV gold if the Corrie writers did not killed off Mason. I hope these two get to act together again in the future."

Meanwhile a sixth pleaded: "Love these guys. Bring back Mason please," followed by crying and heart emojis.

For her part Sydney admitted she was also "team Mason" when asked "Mason or Dylan?"

"I have always been team Mason. I adore Liam (McCheyne who plays Dylan) but for Betsy, Mason all the way," she said.
