The 6 Best Deep Pocket Sheet Sets for That Big New Mattress

The 6 Best Deep Pocket Sheet Sets for That Big New Mattress
Bamboo Sheet Set
Pros
  • Fits many tall mattresses
  • Fitted sheet has “side” and “bottom” tags for easier sheets swap days
Cons
  • Pricey, even when they’re on sale

For a while, I was skeptical of the Cozy Earth hype. This direct-to-consumer bedding brand made the big time when its Bamboo Sheets Set landed on Oprah’s Favorite Things list in 2018. After a few bad run-ins with expensive bedding—price does not equal quality, folks—I was ready to throw in the towel and offer the Cozy Earth sheets up to someone else to test, but I had just gotten a 14.5-inch mattress and desperately needed deep-pocket sheets.

Boasting a 20” pocket depth, for a while, these were the only sheets that easily fit over my mattress (with room to spare). These sheets were as buttery soft as the reviews claimed and held up despite weekly washing—in fact, they got a little softer. And as someone who dreads wrestling the fitted sheet on my bed, I really appreciated that Cozy Earth put tiny labels on the fitted sheet, so I didn’t have to guess which side it was. Seriously, why don’t all companies do this? It’s my favorite sheet set.

Best Affordable Deep Pocket Sheets

Extra Deep Queen Sheet Set
Pros
  • Only $65
  • It has the deepest pocket depth on this list, so it can essentially fit around any mattress.
  • Available in plenty of colors and patterns
Cons
  • Made out of microfiber
  • On the thinner side

If you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for deep-pocket sheets, then this Amazon find will do the job. These sheets are top-rated for mostly for the reason that they fit around almost anything. For example, if you have a deep mattress and decide to put a 2” mattress topper on top of it to enhance your sleeping experience, then this sheet will probably fit around both mattress and topper (as long as the whole stack is not taller than 24”).

You are getting what you pay for, though. These sheets are made out of microfiber, which is a synthetic fabric usually made out of polyester and nylon. They also only have a 200 thread count, which is not ideal, and reviewers call them soft yet thin. I personally do not like the feel of microfiber on my skin, but to each their own.

Best Luxury Deep Pocket Sheets

Giza 45 Natura Collection
Pros
  • Beautiful sheets made of the highest quality cotton
  • Long-lasting
Cons
  • The price tag
  • Slightly fussy washing instructions
  • Only one color available

If your heart stopped for a second when you saw how much these sheets cost, I get it! A set of these sheets costs almost two months of rent for me. But hear me out, SFERRA has been around since 1891, producing the world's best bedding. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I stepped foot into its New York City store. The craftsmanship is insane. If you’re complaining about your sheets ripping or degrading after a year or two, it’s because they are not made well and are not meant to last. These are made to last a long, long time.

These 17-inch-deep sheets might outlive your mattress, honestly. Made out of Giza 45, which is derived from Egyptian cotton grown alongside the Nile River, these sheets are then woven in Italy with this discreet, but elegant floral pattern on the sateen jacquard. You’re not going to find anything else like this on this list.

Best Cotton Percale Deep Pocket Sheets

Percale Deep Pocket Set
Pros
  • Fitted and flat sheets are specifically designed for deep mattresses
Cons
  • Some reviewers say the sheet feels too thin

The Company Store is one of my favorite places to find mid-price bedding and bath essentials. I’ve tested a pillow, bath towels, and a coverlet, and was impressed by everything. It’s rare that I find a retailer that does different types of products well but The Company surprised me.

There aren’t many bedding brands that have sheets designed to go around thick mattresses, though honestly, with how deep mattresses are getting, I assume it’ll be more of a thing soon. These cotton percale sheets are OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified and described as crisp, cool, and soft. Just be sure to dry these sheets on low to help extend the life of the elastic on the fitted sheet.

Best Sateen Deep Pocket Sheets

Luxury Sateen
Pros
  • Cooling
  • “Long” and “short” side tags for easy bed-making
  • Plenty of trendy colors and patterns available
Cons
  • Plenty of trendy colors and patterns available

Another one tested by yours truly, the Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Core Sheets Set requires a little tug of war to get over my mattress but once it’s in place, it stays there. This sateen sheet set is designed for hot sleepers, and I can vouch for its effectiveness. I’m a hot, sweaty sleeper, while my boyfriend is a cold sleeper. I wake up cool and dry, and my boyfriend has never complained about being cold while lying on this set, even if it ends up on our bed during the winter, so it’s also a good set for normal sleepers.

I found the sheets on the crisp side when I first put them on our bed last year, but I like starchy, hotel-like sheets. After about four washes, they were sateen-level soft, so if you’re willing to be a little patient, I recommend them.

Best Linen Deep-Pocket Sheets

European Linen Sheet Set
Pros
  • Well-priced for linen sheets
Cons
  • Softens up after several washes
  • Some might not love that wrinkly look they get

If you haven’t heard of Quince yet, I’m about to blow your mind. Quince is an everything store, but unlike the huge online retailers, most of it is pretty well-made for the price. There are some misses, like the silk skirt I got there a few years ago, and (probably) the caviar. Some industries don't need to be disrupted... That said, the bedding is surprisingly good.

Finding deep-pocket linen sheets was a task—linen isn’t exactly known as a stretchy fabric. Quince has some top-rated ones that can accommodate 16” deep mattresses. As expected with linen sheets, it will take multiple washes for them to feel softer, but reviewers say that these sheets last years.

A mattress that is more than 14” deep is widely considered to be a deep mattress. The reason why these mattresses can be up to 24” tall is that they’re made of layers of memory foam and coils. Be sure to consult the website or store you’re ordering from, because sometimes it’s not advertised that it’s a deep mattress beyond that it’s “heavy.”

Depth

If you have a 20” mattress, you can’t buy the sheets that are 16” or 18” thick, unless you want a bad time. Now that you’ve opted for a deeper mattress, you’ll need to consult the sheet dimensions each time you buy sheets

Type of Sheet

This is all about personal preference. If you are a hot sleeper, for example, you should aim for sateen, cotton percale, or linen sheets. If you value softness above all else, then you should go for silk, bamboo, or Egyptian cotton. Regardless of all of this, if you want high-quality sheets, you’ll want to stay away from microfiber, which is made of synthetic fabrics. Sheets made out of natural fabrics will be more expensive than synthetic sheets.
