The Emmys Actually Gave The Pitt the Credit It Deserved

The Emmys Actually Gave The Pitt the Credit It Deserved
preview for The Pitt - official trailer (HBO Max)

Gather round, residents—I have a quick story. Around the middle of The Pitt's first-season run in February, I interviewed Noah Wyle for a piece that would run alongside the penultimate episode. He was all the things you'd expect—kind, gracious, humble, thoughtful—but I left the interview thinking about how damn heartfelt this sentiment, especially, was from the actor.

"I was aiming at everybody's chest," Wyle said of his intentions with the series. "If I hit it, it's gonna make you want to come up and tell me why. And so I look at the people that want to go and tell me. What they want to tell me is their way of saying, You hit me in the chest. It means that my little mission was accomplished."

Noah, if you're reading this? It's safe to say your little mission was accomplished.

This Tuesday morning, the Television Academy announced the nominations for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards. And while HBO Max's breakout medical drama wasn't the biggest winner of the field, it nabbed an impressive 13 nominations. We're fuming about Andor's many snubs, but we're happy to say that the Emmys got it (mostly) right when it came to The Pitt. The most notable nominations include Wyle for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Katherine LaNasa for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and The Pitt itself for Outstanding Drama Series. The Pitt also earned two Directing nods for Amanda Marsalis and John Wells's work in "6 p.m." and "7 a.m.," respectively. You'll remember the former, especially, as the searing portrait of how a hospital responds to a mass shooting.

Now, I will quibble and say that the Television Academy whiffed on nominating the rest of The Pitt's ensemble for individual acting awards. While Shawn Hatosy received a deserving Guest Actor nomination, you won't find Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Patrick Ball, Tracy Ifeachor, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, or Gerran Howell on the list. If I didn't love this season of Severance so much, I would've called for The Pitt to sweep the acting categories. Regardless, let's hope that The Pitt takes home some hardware come September.

The only thing I have left to say? Congrats to the PTMC crew—and I can't wait until season 2. Thankfully, it's coming sooner than you think.
