Footy star Jack Higgins slams Aussie city with savage comment on live TV - as rival player tells him to 'bugger off' and state premier gets involved

St Kilda star Jack Higgins has been hammered by footy fans and the premier of South Australia after taking a playful swipe at the city of Adelaide during his post-match interview on Sunday.

The Saints defeated Port Adelaide by 17 points at Adelaide Oval, solidifying their place in the top eight after four rounds.

The club has elected to stay in Adelaide for the week as Gather Round descends on South Australia from Thursday.

Higgins was asked if he had anything planned for the week away.

'No, I don't like Adelaide, so I'll probably be in my room playing Call of Duty with the boys,' he told Channel Seven's Erin Phillips, referring to the popular video game.

Seven commentator James Brayshaw, who lived in Adelaide during his cricket career, was not having it.

'Come on, Higgo — It's a cracking town! What are you talking about?' he said.

Seven's Jason Bennett added: 'After he's said that, he may not want to leave the hotel room!'

Premier Peter Malinauskas has also commented on the situation, insisting Higgins should get out of his room and 'see a few things'.

'There used to be a time when we would get defensive and uppity about these sorts of comments but I think we've moved beyond that,' Mr Malinauskas said.

'In South Australia I think people feel really comfortable about the fact we've got pride in our state, and we've got lots to offer and we know that more and more people are coming over to enjoy it.

'My only recommendation to Jack is that playing Call of Duty in a hotel room, that's not my cup of tea, I would be more inclined if I was him to get out and about and see a few things.'

Higgins' cheeky remark didn't go down well with locals, including Adelaide Crows star Darcy Fogarty.

'He mustn't have spent too much time here. There's so much to offer,' he told Seven.

'If he doesn't like it, I reckon he can bugger off pretty quickly.'

Fogarty loves Adelaide so much that he last week had his arm tattooed with an image of a can of the state's famous Coopers beer.

'Getting something you love for your first tattoo. I chose Coopers Brewery,' Fogarty wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of himself with the tattoo.

Coopers replied in the comments: 'You'll always remember your first.'

Higgins' Saints take on the GWS Giants at Norwood Oval on Sunday, while Forgarty's Crows tackle Geelong in the opening match of Gather Round at Adelaide Oval.
