BERNARDSTON — After two rounds of the 92nd Massachusetts Girls Junior Amateur Championship at Crumpin-Fox Club, it’s clear the course has been a challenge for all competitors.

Through 36 holes, just three players — Mount Pleasant Golf Club’s Maddie Smith, Blue Hill Country Club’s Lillian Guleserian and Needham Golf Club’s Kaitlyn Doe — shot even par or better. On another hot day on the course Tuesday, just four players shot even par or better for their round, showcasing the challenges that CFC presents to competitors.

Smith, Guleserian and Doe finished with the low three scores through two rounds, and they’ll be the top three seeds heading into the match play portion of the event on Wednesday.

The top 16 finishers over the 36 holes qualified for the Round of 16. Wednesday’s action will feature Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches before semifinals and finals take place Thursday.

“I’m just happy I have a pretty good seed going into the next two days,” Doe said. “Hopefully I can continue to play well.”

After firing a 2-under 70 on Monday, including an eagle at No. 14, to enter Tuesday in first place, Guleserian didn’t have the second round she hoped for.

A pair of bogeys put her 1-over after nine and although she fired back with birdies on 10 and 14, bogeys on 15 and 16 put her 1-over on the day.

Still, she enters match play as the No. 2 seed with a great chance of taking home the trophy.

“It wasn’t bad,” Guleserian said. “It wasn’t as great as [Monday]. No eagles between [Doe and I] but it was still a pretty good round.”

Doe also closed her opening round on Monday strong, posting an eagle on No. 17 to finish with an even 72. It was more of the same on Tuesday, Doe carding birdies on Nos. 5 and 9 to start 2-under on the front nine but a pair of bogeys on the back half saw her once again finish an even 72. That seeded her third going into Wednesday.

The round of the day went to Mount Pleasant Golf Club’s Maddie Smith, who fired the day’s low score of 3-under 69 after scoring birdies on Nos. 2, 7, 9, 12 and 16.

Even after a 1-over round on Monday, Smith’s strong push on Tuesday earned her the top seed going into match play as she finished her two rounds at 2-under overall.

KOHR Golf’s Adriana Eaton was the only other competitor to shoot under par on Tuesday, firing a 2-under 70. After posting a 4-over 76 on Monday, Eaton is seeded fourth in match play.

Sophie Redmond and Lucy Wang finished tied for fifth with total scores of 5-over to qualify for match play. Rounding out the match play competitors are Olivia Jatczak (+9), Cindy Cao (+9), Erika Redmond (+11), Madelyn Vetri (+11), Maddie Chang (+12), Granby’s Ryley Regan (+13), Angie Yu (+14), Lauren Connor (+14), Cecily Henshon (+15) and Reva Machanavajhula (+16). Regan, the No. 12 seed, will play No. 5 Sophie Redmond in the Round of 16 at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

As the tournament has gone on, players like Guleserian said they are starting to figure out the course and hope to put it all together in match play.

“I feel like on the greens we learned where you want to be and where you don’t want to be,” Guleserian said.

Match play offers a different challenge for golfers, as strategy goes into how your opponent is playing and has played that specific hole.

For some, Wednesday will be the first time playing in that format while for others like Guleserian, it’s a format they’re confident in.

“I love match play,” Guleserian said. “It’ll be fun. There’s a different strategy for match play. You can take advantage and go for more pins on some holes and hold back on different holes.”

Doe is on the opposite end of the spectrum without much match play experience, but enters confident and looking forward to the different style of play.

“I’m a little new to match play,” Doe said, “but I’ll figure it out. I think it’ll be a little more fun because I won’t have to just focus on my score. I’ll be able to play golf and be free.”
