Jos Buttler on brink of QUITTING as England cricket captain after humiliation

Jos Buttler is on the brink of quitting as England’s white-ball captain after their humiliating Champions Trophy exit.
An eight-run defeat by minnows Afghanistan in Lahore knocked out England in the group stage and Buttler, wearing the haunted look of a condemned man, admitted: “For myself and the guys at the top, we should consider all possibilities.
“I don't want to say any emotional statements right now.”
After failing to defend 351 against old enemy Australia at the weekend, Buttler’s side had to beat the tournament’s 100-1 rank outsiders to stand a chance of reaching the semi-finals. But their attack was flayed by Ibrahim Zadran’s sensational 177 off 146 balls and then, chasing 326 to stay alive, England’s reply was undone by a catalogue of horrendous shots.
Joe Root (120 off 111 deliveries) was an honourable exception, but Buttler has now presided over three Fosbury flops in as many global tournaments after the holders’ World Cup blow-out in India 16 months ago and an unconvincing scramble into the World T20 semi-finals last summer.
Buttler admitted: ”To be eliminated from the tournament, it's really disappointing. We had our chances in the game, it was another fantastic game. We're gutted to come out the other side.
”Joe's been brilliant in all formats, he played an unbelievable innings and showed a lot of character. If one of us in the top six could have stayed with him, we would've got over (the line) tonight.”
Lord’s parted comply with white-ball coach Matthew Mott last year, placing Test guru Brendon McCullum - architect of England’s fearless ‘Bazball’ ethos - in charge of all formats.
But McCullum has made a poor start to his reign as limited-overs coach, and England are light years from the swaggering buccaneers Eoin Morgan led to World Cup triumph in 2019.
