Liverpool rival conceding Premier League title already – 'It's impossible to catch them'

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca fears that Liverpool's fast start to the season means it could be "impossible to catch them" with the Reds already boasting a five point lead after just five games. They are the only Premier League side to have a 100 per cent record.

Their win in the Merseyside derby extended their perfect start to the defence of their title and Arne Slot's side have continued to come up trumps, all while their rivals have kept dropping points in the opening weeks.

Liverpool made an early statement when they beat Arsenal at Anfield, which opened up a slight buffer at the top. The Reds have also been aided by some late winners against Bournemouth, Newcastle and Burnley.

The draw between Arsenal and Manchester City on Sunday further allowed Liverpool to extend their advantage. As things stand the champions are five points clear of the Gunners, seven ahead of Chelsea and eight clear of City.

That comes after they spent more than £400million on new recruits, twice breaking the British-transfer record to land Florian Wirtz and then Alexander Isak.

Maresca's Chelsea may have had loose hopes of furthering their own ambitions this term, but already the Italian claims the Reds may be too far ahead.

He said: “If they continue in this way I think it is impossible to catch them, not just for us, but for all the clubs.

"They have been doing a fantastic job since last year, and the players they have decided to buy shows the intention of the club to go again for the Premier League and the Champions League, and that is quite clear.”

Liverpool's perfect start to the season has extended onto the European stage. They won their opening Champions League game against Atletico Madrid at Anfield. Despite squandering a 2-0 lead the English side came up trumps in stoppage time as Virgil van Dijk headed home their winner.

The Reds are seeking to win successive league titles for the first time since the 1980s and have put themselves in the perfect position to do so. Their recruitment has helped them enjoy a blistering start whilst there is a call for them to fight on both fronts.

Arsenal were tipped as their most likely challengers but the Gunners have already had their own issues.

Questions are being asked of Mikel Arteta after he again spent big in the summer, but he's yet to find the ideal winning formula from his star-studded squad.
