Local briefs: Amherst Koufax takes down Hatfield

The Amherst 14U baseball team downed Hatfield, 7-1, at Amherst Middle School in a PVYBL Sandy Koufax game on Wednesday to improve to 5-1-1 on the season.

Gus Garrett Peltier (five strikeouts) tossed four scoreless innings for Amherst, before Daniel Lebron closed out the contest from the rubber with the save.

At the plate, Cyrus Arwade went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for Amherst while Oliver Howard poked a couple of hits and secured an RBI.

Hatfield’s Owen Belden played well (2-for-3, double) in the defeat.

Upcoming events at Basketball HOF

Billy Donovan will make a virtual appearance at the Hall of Fame to share his insights on leadership and coaching on Tuesday, July 8. The former Florida Gators head coach led his teams to back‑to‑back NCAA championships in 2006 and 2007 and has been the head coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Chicago Bulls. Donovan is among the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2025.

Michael Cooper will be in Springfield on Friday, July 11. The 1987 NBA Defensive Player of the Year for the Los Angeles Lakers was inducted as part of the Class of 2024.

Madison Booker, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, will be onsite at the Hall on Thursday, July 17. Booker stars for the Texas Longhorns and fans will get the chance to hear stories from Booker’s stellar sophomore season.
