Local sports: Amherst and Northampton 14U baseball teams suffer playoff losses; hole-in-one at Northampton Country Club

The Amherst and Northampton 14U baseball teams both suffered losses during the Koufax Division playoffs on Thursday. The Hurricanes were downed by West County, 12-6, while the Blue Devils fell to Whitingham, 5-3, ending their summer season.
Amherst stumbled into an early hole against West County, down 7-0, through the first three frames and never recovered. Brady Klaes bashed a home run to put the Hurricanes on the board as the lone bright spot of the contest for the hosts.
Amherst remains in the playoff picture and will face off against Whitingham on Saturday at Deerfield Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Despite a respectable outing from Northampton’s Oliver Yau on the mound, the Blue Devils also went into a deficit right away and couldn’t overcome it. Yau pitched five innings, scattered eight hits, gave up two earned runs, struck out four batters, and only walked one.
Northampton didn’t score until the fifth inning on Thursday, but by that point, it already trailed 5-0. Nicholas Theroux and Austin Barcomb swung the bats well as the duo each collected two hits for the Blue Devils.
