Luca Brecel reveals health problems are behind his extended break from snooker

Former world snooker champion has disclosed that his extended break from the sport stems from health concerns. The 30-year-old hasn't featured in competition since April and has withdrawn from numerous tournaments with scant explanation until this revelation.
Brecel postponed his comeback by at least another five weeks after pulling out of the Saudi Arabia Masters. The star was set to take on Englishman Sanderson Lam in the third round but his rival received a walkover following Brecel's withdrawal on medical grounds.
The world No. 39 hasn't played since his World Championship exit at the Crucible in April.
Brecel made it to the quarter-finals in Sheffield but succumbed 13-8 to Judd Trump. Since then, the Belgian Bullet has been missing from the opening four events of the 2025/26 snooker season.
Brecel has sat out the season-opening Championship League and withdrew from qualifying for both the Wuhan and British Open.
It's understood Brecel won't face sanctions for missing the Saudi ranking event. His health troubles would seem to justify his recent absences.
Brecel acknowledged it's been a trying spell in his career as he sought to update his supporters.
In an Instagram story, he stated: "Hi everyone, some of you might have been wondering why I am not participating in snooker events since April.
"The truth is that I am suffering with health problems. Me and my team are doing everything we can to come out of this stronger and better than before.
"It's been really frustrating to not be able to travel and compete in tournaments! But... I always choose to be optimistic! Tough times often lead to something great!"
Brecel will now be sidelined until at least September. Next month could see him return for the Xi'an Grand Prix and Northern Ireland Open qualifiers in Leicester, health permitting.
The 2023 Crucible champion has been absent from the snooker scene for over three months now.
During this break, he seems to have been making the most of the summer back home. Brecel has been spending time in Maasmechelen, enjoying a respite from his professional commitments.
Alongside his girlfriend, Brecel has been relishing life away from the baize. His Instagram posts show the couple cycling, indulging in good food, and sipping on Stella, wine, and cocktails.
