Mayo Reportedly Considering Unexpected Name In Hunt For Next Manager

While the fallout from Kevin McStay's departure as Mayo manager has rumbled, the authorities within the county have quickly shifted their focus towards appointing his replacement ahead of the 2026 season.
It remains to be seen what direction Mayo will go down. The Connacht side have traditionally stayed within the county when it came to appointing a manager, with James Horan, Stephen Rochford, and Kevin McStay the most recent examples.
A couple of those have been heavily linked with the role once again this time around, with Horan and Rochford presumed to be among the prime candidates for the position.
However, one report suggests that Mayo could look to go in a very different direction for 2026.

Mayo Considering Unexpected Name In Hunt For Next ManagerThe Connaught Telegraph are reporting that Mayo could look to appoint Tony McEntee for the 2026 season.
Armagh native McEntee recently left his role as Sligo manager, having been in charge of the county from 2020-2025. He also managed his home club Crossmaglen Rangers to consecutive All-Ireland titles in 2011 and 2012, before spending time as St Brigid's in Roscommon.
Of course, he does have some previous history with Mayo. McEntee would act as a selector for the inter-county team during Stephen Rochford's time in charge. He is said to be very highly thought of in the county as a result.
It is suggested that the 48-year old's more 'direct' managerial could appeal to Mayo as they look to shake up the panel on the back of a couple of disappointing seasons.
A Mayo County Board meeting will take place on Wednesday, at which point a clearer path to appointing the next senior manager could well become clear.
If they do opt to go for an outside appointment, you can be sure that it will ruffle a few feathers out west.
