Outrageous Stat Proves Tyrone U20 Star Is One Of The Next Great GAA Talents

Tyrone defeated Louth on Wednesday night to win their eighth U20 All-Ireland football title and their third in four years.

Despite giving Tyrone of problems at midfield in the opening half, Louth were unable to stick with Tyrone and when Noah Grimes scored his second goal just on half-time it looked like Tyrone were on their way to back-to-back All-Ireland titles.

Louth battled back and were only three behind when Darragh Dorian's shot thundered off the crossbar but after two quickfire Eoin McElholm goals the contest was over.

McElholm in a magnificent performance scored 2-4 from play and showed exactly why he has been featuring for Malachy O'Rourke's side in this year's senior championship. This tweet from Niall Gartland shows that despite being so young, McElholm is more than comfortable on the big occasion.

Eoin McElholm has now scored 4-15 across three All-Ireland finals. 2-3 today, 0-7 in last year’s final and 2-5 in the 2023 Hogan Cup decider. And every single point and goal making up that tally of 4-15 came from open play.

Speaking to TG4 in the aftermath of the victory McElholm described the feeling of winning a second All-Ireland and defeating Donegal in the senior championship on Saturday.

That's what we planned to do at the start, we came to win the All-Ireland and to be there on the winning side is absolutely special. It wasn't going for us at the start I thought we missed a few easy chances, maybe gave the ball away easily a few times but then it just opened up with our pace and we just cut them through.

It's been a brilliant week for Tyrone and to be part of two of the teams is absolutely special and we'll enjoy tonight and see what happens.

Tyrone's underage talent factory

That All-Ireland victory for Paul Devlin's side leaves Tyrone third on the U20 roll of honour with only Kerry, on ten and Cork on twelve ahead of them.

This underage conveyor belt in Tyrone shows no sign of stopping with their minor side winning an Ulster title on Sunday evening with a seven point victory over Cavan.

The success of Tyrone at underage level in the past few years has been almost all-consuming, with Omagh CBS winning the Hogan Cup in 2023 and 2024, a number of these Tyrone U20 players featuring prominently.

With their senior team already brimming with young talent in the guise of Seánie O'Donnell, the Canavan brothers and McElholm it would be fair to say that Tyrone are going to be remaining at the top table for plenty of years to come.
