Philly McMahon Couldn't Resist Dig At 'Dublin's Second Team' After Leinster SFC Loss

Philly McMahon Couldn't Resist Dig At 'Dublin's Second Team' After Leinster SFC Loss

Dublin were handed a first Leinster SFC defeat in 15 years on Sunday when Meath stormed to a 0-23 to 1-16 win over their old rivals in Portlaoise.

The Royal County's historic win not only banished Dublin from the provincial decider for the first time since 2010, but also booked Meath's spot in the Leinster final against Louth in two weeks' time.

It was an emphatic and crushing defeat for Dessie Farrell's Dublin that proved more abruptly than ever that Dublin's reign of domination in the Leinster SFC is now well and truly over.

The telltale signs were all there when Dublin hobbled past Wicklow in the quarterfinal, but nothing could have prepared Dublin fans for the first half of semi-final action in Portlaoise that saw Meath race out of the traps with nine unanswered points in the opening ten minutes, before heading in at the break with a twelve point, 0-17 to 0-05 lead.

Despite Dublin slowly but surely crawling their way back into contention as the second half rolled towards its conclusion and closing the gap to a mere two points by the time the clock struck 68 minutes, Robbie Brennan's Meath had too much in the tank for a Dublin side who were as stunned as everyone else in the country.

Philly McMahon couldn't resist cheeky dig at Dublin's 'second team' after Leinster loss

Just as the rest of his fellow countymen were, Dublin legend Philly McMahon was left in utter disbelief as he learned about the result live on the BBC's GAA Social Podcast.

Jesus, that's crazy isn't it. I'm devastated. That's a big scalp, Meath have struggled, I don't think Meath have done unbelievably well in the league albeit they finished joint third. I watched them a couple of times, Monaghan wiped the floor with them down in Meath.

Looking at that (Dublin) squad, they've done unbelievably well in the league for the changes, 16 new changes in the group, a lot of the leaders gone. I wouldn't have been surprised if they didn't win an All-Ireland but to be knocked out of the Leinster Championship is a big surprise for me.

After overcoming the initial shock of his native county's fall, McMahon couldn't help but take a cheeky dig at the amount of Dubs living and playing in Meath, joking that it was 'Dublin's second team' who'd progressed to the Leinster final.

The (rivalry) is still there, particularly from the Meath point of view. The big thing with Meath is, there's a lot of people from Dublin living on outskirts of Dublin now, Ratoath, Ashbourne, Dunshaughlin, Duleek all of these places have a massive amount of Dubs.

There's lads I would imagine on the Meath team that are Dubs, I've trained a couple of young lads that are Dublin fans playing for Meath.

We will take that, that's Dublin's second team after beating us there, Dublin's second team is after winning there today. We help the border counties in and around us you know.

Unfortunately for those in the capital, whatever it's spun, the day everyone knew was coming has arrived and Dublin's decade and a half long reign atop Leinster is over.

Meath will now take on Louth in a repeat of the famous 2010 final in Croke Park in two weeks time, where either Robbie or Ger Brennan will be taking the Delaney Cup away from the Liffey.
