Roscommon Goalkeeper Conor Carroll Reportedly Set For Big Club Transfer

Roscommon goalkeeper Conor Carroll is reportedly on the verge of transferring to 2023 Connacht champions St. Brigid’s, according to The Irish Examiner’s Maurice Brosnan.

Carroll, who previously lined out at club level with Oranmore-Maree in Galway, did not feature in their 2024 intermediate championship campaign. The Galway outfit made it as far as the semi-finals before falling to eventual champions St Michael’s.

The talented shot-stopper boasts an impressive underage CV, having represented Galway from U14 to U20 and played under Pádraic Joyce at that level in 2019. He also claimed a Sigerson Cup title with NUI Galway in 2022.

After switching his inter-county allegiance to Roscommon under Anthony Cunningham, Conor Carroll quickly cemented his place as first-choice goalkeeper. He was recognised for his form with an All-Star nomination in 2023 and has since become a central figure in Davy Burke’s squad.

The goalkeeper has strong Rossie roots, both of his parents are from Roscommon, and he is a nephew of Roscommon GAA Chairperson and head of the CCCC Brian Carroll.

A move to St. Brigid’s, who reached the All-Ireland club final in January 2024 before losing to Glen, would mark a significant addition for the Kiltoom-based club. The team is currently managed by former Galway hurling manager Cunningham, who previously oversaw Carroll’s move to the county setup.

The team also contains fellow Roscommon players Ben O'Carroll, Brian Stack and Ruaidhrí Fallon.

Such a transfer is not unprecedented in the recent history of Roscommon. Conor Cox was involved in a similar move, transferring from Listowel to Eire Og and linking up with the Rossies at inter-county level.

St. Brigid’s will be looking to bounce back in 2025 after suffering a surprise quarter-final exit to Pádraig Pearses in last year’s county championship. They’ve been drawn in Group B this season alongside Michael Glaveys, Western Gaels, and Elphin.

St. Brigid's currently sit top of Division 1 in Roscommon with eight wins from their opening ten games with a positive scoring difference of 81 points.
