Sam Kerr's beloved grandmother breaks her silence after horror accident as she stuns her family with amazing act

Sam Kerr's grandmother Coral has spoken publicly for the first time since a devastating accident left her in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The great-grandmother from Palmyra, Perth, was struck by a ute on December 27 last year, just metres from her home, as she stepped off a bus.

The horrific incident left her in critical condition with multiple fractures and internal injuries, forcing her into months of hospitalisation and rehabilitation.

A 63-year-old man has been charged over the incident, which Coral admitted she didn't think she would walk away from.

'I never thought I'd see this age and after that accident,' Coral told Channel Nine during an emotional 90th birthday celebration over the weekend.

Despite her ordeal, the 90-year-old gathered with loved ones to celebrate a birthday she didn't think she would reach - and stunned them by walking unaided into the celebration.

'Fortunately, I have no recollection whatsoever,' she said.

The impact left her with a broken pelvis, fractured shin, damaged ankle, and a rod surgically inserted into her leg.

'I had a broken pelvis, a broken shin, I've got a rod in my leg and I had a fracture on this ankle,' she explained.

Coral's family and neighbours had feared the worst when she was struck, with bystanders rushing to her side as she lay unconscious on the pavement.

'She really wasn't responding too much, she was very sweaty and clammy... I think she was in shock obviously,' neighbour Mary Ivey recalled.

Police later charged 63-year-old Mark John Britt with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

It's alleged Britt attempted to overtake the bus by mounting the kerb, striking Coral before crashing into a power cable.

During a court appearance, Britt stunned the courtroom by saying, 'I killed the lady, but she revived herself.'

He told the magistrate he hadn't had access to his diabetic medication for three days prior to the incident and insisted he didn't intend harm.

'I swerved around… I swerved around,' he said, later claiming outside court, 'It was a miracle Ms Kerr did not die.'

Magistrate Thomas Hall advised Britt to seek legal counsel, with prosecutors awaiting toxicology results before further proceedings.

Back in Perth, Coral's family was simply relieved to have her home.

Grandsons Daniel and Levi Kerr praised their grandmother's incredible strength and positive spirit through her recovery.

'She's gone through her rehabilitation really well,' Daniel said. 'It's really nice to just be here in general.'

Levi was particularly moved to see his grandmother arrive at the birthday party under her own power.

'She walked into the room, which was a massive achievement,' he said.

Though Sam Kerr couldn't attend in person - currently in London recovering from an ACL injury - her bond with her grandmother remains strong.

'Yes, we're very close, yes,' Coral said.

The football star had flown back to Perth shortly after the incident alongside her father to be at Coral's side in hospital.

Coral's son Roger revealed the extent of her injuries: 'She's had both her hips done, her pelvis done, a rod in her knee, two broken ankles… she's come through all of it.'

'She has never been under anaesthetic in her life [before now],' he added, calling her 'a real strong lady.'

Now back on her feet and surrounded by family and friends, Coral reflected on her long life with gratitude.

'I've had a very fruitful and happy and joyous life,' she said. 'And I'm ever grateful for that.'
