Marko Arnautović has led Inter Milan into the semi-finals of the Italian football cup. Austria's record international player scored in the 39th minute on Tuesday evening with a spectacular volley from around 20 meters into the Lazio Rome goal after a corner. Inter won 2-0 in the end. When asked about Arnautović's performance, coach Inzaghi said that the Viennese is a player "who always performs well." In the semi-finals, the Nerazzurri will face city rivals Milan.
Inzaghi was generous with his praise for the 35-year-old. "His goal was great: I'm very proud of him and of all my boys. We have to keep it up in the semi-final against AC Milan," explained the coach of the Black and Blues. After the match, the goalscorer himself was not very impressed by his possible application for the Puskás Award, the annual FIFA prize for the best goal scored: "What is important for Inter is also important for me. The most important thing is to win the game and we are very happy," said the 121-time international, emphasizing the team's victory rather than his individual performance.
Rotation player Arnautović, who is rarely used in Serie A and only sporadically played in the current Champions League season, is at least part of the regular team in the Coppa Italia. The attacker was in the starting lineup for the second game in a row and this time he scored Inter's 1-0 lead. Inzaghi did not leave the volley goal entirely to chance: "We knew he had to position himself on the edge of the penalty area - he has great shooting power," said the 48-year-old. After just over an hour, Arnautović's working day was over.
"Deadly Weapon" in Inter's Hand
The Italian press was also impressed. The Gazzetta dello Sport celebrated Arnautović's goal as a "real gem" and was generous with its praise. "Hats off to Arnautović for his fabulous volley, but even more so for his personality. He drags the whole team to success," commented the sports paper, which gave the former "enfant terrible" the best rating of all players. "Inter wins thanks to a masterpiece by Arnautović. The Austrian is a deadly weapon in Inter's hands," wrote the Corriere dello Sport.
The next match is on April 2 in the semi-final against city rivals AC Milan, with the return match taking place on April 23.
