Hearing before the ECJ: Can a reform save Meloni's Albania model?

The "Albania model" is now a burden on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni . It has already cost at least 650 million euros without having produced any significant benefits so far. Meloni agreed to set up the Italian reception and deportation camps for illegal migrants in northern Albania with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama in November 2023. The agreement has an initial term of five years and provides for the construction and operation of a reception center in the port of Shëngjin and a deportation camp on the site of a nearby former military airfield in Gjadër by the Italian authorities. The plan was for a capacity of up to 3,000 migrants per month.
