Saxony-Anhalt: 36 politically motivated crimes recorded in memorial sites
In the past two years, 36 politically motivated crimes have been recorded in Saxony-Anhalt in connection with memorial sites. In 25 of these cases, the crimes were directed against memorial sites that bear the character of commemorating the suffering of people during the rule of National Socialism, according to a response from the state government to a minor inquiry from Left Party parliamentary group leader Eva von Angern. According to the information, 10 crimes were recorded in 2023, compared to 15 last year.
All Nazi memorial sites in rural areas, such as Lichtenburg Prettin, Langenstein and Gardelegen, are equipped with burglar alarm systems. The Feldscheune Isenschnibbe memorial site near Gardelegen is also to receive a video surveillance system for the outdoor area, as property damage is a recurring problem there. However, safety, construction, financial, cultural remembrance and monument preservation aspects must be taken into account, and implementation will take some time, it was said.
