The web offset printing company Walstead Leykam plans to close its site in St. Pölten by the end of the year. According to the company, around 55 employees are directly affected, according to the response to an inquiry from the APA. "The closure of the site is the result of fundamental changes in the printing industry in Europe in recent years, including market changes, increasing cost burdens and, as a result, a lack of profitability," it was announced in a press release on Wednesday.
The decision "was made after a thorough analysis of the current market situation and a careful review of all available options," it said. The board of Walstead Leykam & CE, the Central European division of the Walstead Group, has "entered into consultations" with employee representatives at the St. Pölten site, it was informed. A social plan is also on the agenda. The company wants to maintain its "position as a leading provider of printing services, their processing and POS solutions in Europe." "In order to achieve these goals and maintain the highest service standards, sometimes difficult decisions have to be made," the company said.
Walstead took over NP Druck in St. Pölten from the Lower Austrian Press House in 2018. Magazines, brochures and leaflets are produced at the site. In 2019, the company cut jobs in Austria. The Walstead Leykam Druck Group has its headquarters in Neudörfl (Mattersburg district) in Burgenland, and production has previously also taken place in St. Pölten. The company also has printing sites in Slovenia and the Czech Republic. The consolidated turnover of the Walstead Leykam & CE Group in 2023 was around 350 million euros, and it employed around 2,000 people.
