Film: Men show their pictures, women their breasts

Reading time: 3 min.
The woman doesn’t just want to be a muse: With “The Bonnards – Painting and Loving” by Martin Provost, the criticism of the “male gaze” has also arrived in conventional arthouse films.
Pierre Bonnard gets straight to the point: The young woman he picked up on the street earlier, who is currently posing for him in his Paris studio, is asked to please undress, as he would now like to see her breasts. The woman reacts in consternation: "The breasts, really?" But Bonnard remains persistent, and the resistance is soon overcome. First, Bonnard paints the exposed breast, then he grabs it from behind. And although there is a bit of resistance at first, this too disappears, allowing the scene to end where it should: in bed.
