The German embassy advises people in Iran to stay at home, while the Israeli army and Trump advise them to leave Tehran. So where to? A call to family there—and the war comes live over the phone.

"The high-rise building you've probably seen pictures of, the one with the upper floors blown away, where one of the generals was hit, is 200 meters away from us as the crow flies," my sister says. "Drone! The Israelis flew a drone into that guy's bedroom. That's how precise they are. The drones were planted somewhere in Tehran, which is why they didn't show up on any radar. Not that that would have changed anything; our government doesn't warn us anyway. Only if you don't wear a headscarf—that's what warning systems are for. Then they'll find you even in the most remote corners of the city and immediately send you a text message. They'll kill us for not wearing a headscarf. They don't care if bombs fall on our heads..."
