If there was a last moment when something resembling a European feeling manifested itself, it was the evening before the Budapest Pride Parade celebrating Christopher Street Day. That Friday evening began full of fear and misgiving in the evening-light-drenched courtyard of Budapest's baroque City Hall. Mayor Gergely Karácsony, a Green and a combative thorn in Viktor Orbán's autocratic flank, had hosted a reception. There were snacks, sparkling wine, and freshly squeezed lemonade. But no small talk; the situation seemed too serious for that.
