Fraunhofer Institute: E-cars cheaper and more environmentally friendly

KARLSRUHE (dpa-AFX) – Electric cars are not only better for the environment, but often also for their users' wallets. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) in Karlsruhe have reached this conclusion in a comprehensive overview for which they evaluated more than 70 studies and other scientific sources – including on other topics related to electric vehicles. The ISI last published such an overview in 2020. "A lot has happened since then, especially with batteries," says study author Martin Wietschel, who heads the Energy Technologies and Energy Systems Department at the ISI. This strengthens the position of the electric car.

Taking a holistic view from production to disposal, the researchers estimate that a mid-range electric car purchased today in Germany produces around 40 to 50 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than a comparable combustion engine car with average mileage. Higher emissions during production are offset by advantages during operation.

Ideally cheaper after three years

The situation is similar in terms of cost-effectiveness. "Even today, an electric car can be cheaper than a combustion engine car if you consider the total cost—not just the generally higher purchase price," says Wietschel. If you have a charging option at home or at work, electric vehicles can be more economical than comparable combustion engines after just three years of ownership, the study states. Overall, it says that mileage costs are already similar today for average mileage in the mid-range segment.

The overview does not ignore the fact that there are also areas where electric vehicles have disadvantages – for example, particulate matter from tire wear, which is more pronounced due to the higher weight. "There are more environmentally friendly ways to get around than an electric car," Wietschel summarizes. "But an electric car is still clearly more environmentally friendly than a comparable combustion engine."/ruc/DP/zb
