2025 federal election live ticker: Tens of thousands demand Habeck to stay in office in open letter

On February 23, Germany elected a new Bundestag. The early elections became necessary after the so-called traffic light coalition of the SPD, Greens and FDP collapsed in early November 2024.

On December 16th of last year, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) asked the Bundestag for a vote of confidence and, as expected, did not receive a majority.
